LG Optimus G Pro Review

The LG Optimus G Pro is by far the largest smartphone LG has ever put out and it does come with a number of expected aspects. In a nutshell, it is a wonderful package with its large screen, numerous features, expandable memory and a replaceable battery. But is this enough to convince the average Australian customer to go ahead with its purchase? Read more to find out as we review the great and massive LG Optimus G Pro smartphone.

Hardware

The LG Optimus G Pro comes with a huge 5.5-inch touch-screen that makes the entire form factor almost 6-inches long. And at 9.4 millimeters, it is just as thick as the Samsung Galaxy Note 2. The power button is located right opposite the volume rockers and the Home Button is present right below the screen on the front of the smartphone. The Home Button even has an LED rim around it that glows for notifications.

Underneath the giant screen is one of the more advanced processing packages that you can expect to see in more modern smartphones. The LG Optimus G Pro comes equipped with the Snapdragon 600 CPU that clocks in at a great 1.7GHz. It also features a 320 Graphics Processing Unit in addition to 2 GB of RAM. Benchmark tests show that the LG Optimus G Pro sits among the best.

Features

A 2.1 Megapixel front-facing camera is located up top. The main addition here is the inclusion of a cube button at the top-left of the device that can be used for assigning shortcuts on the phone.

Coming around the back, the smartphone has a 13 Megapixel camera surrounded by a flash diode, a speaker and LG’s typical crystal reflection pattern. The only other feature of the back cover that is probably the most important is the fact that it can be removed. The LG Optimus G Pro is capable of expandable memory and the battery is replaceable.

In addition to this, there is also an antenna that can slide out from the top-right corner of the phone.

The giant HD IPS 5.5-Inch screen supports a High-Definition 1080p resolution. The higher resolution does benefit from the larger screen size and it definitely makes viewing movies and playing games a great fun. Pixel density for the screen comes in at 401ppi, which gives exceptional sharpness to the screen. The display also has numerous viewing angles that showcase the screen’s prowess. At pretty much any angle, the display still looks good and elements on the screen remain legible.

You don’t have to worry about storage in the LG Optimus G Pro as it already comes with 32 GB of onboard memory. This also brings us to the main story here – the removable back cover. 32 GB of memory is already awesome but also consider that you have an SD card slot available. Now you have all the storage that you can want in your smartphone. It is one feature that many people really want, and the LG Optimus G Pro does well to include it. Apart from this, you do get the usual bevy of bells and whistles such as GPS, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

Software

The LG Optimus G Pro’s large UI comes with a lot of different options installed in the Jelly Bean 4.1.2 OS. Most notable of all of these are the queue tabs, which allow multi-tasking on the phone. You can have calendars, memos, internet and videos all open simultaneously as you work your way through each application.

In addition to this, the LG Optimus G Pro UI is one of the most customizable UI’s that can be found in smartphones today. It also has inclusions for the swipe effects and colour schemes for the Home Screen. Its style is simplistic and elegant, but there are so many elements involved that the Optimus UI feels like the whole package.

Battery Life And Capacity

There have been mixed results with batteries in phones with larger screens as of late, but LG has made sure that power won’t be an issue for the normal user.

LG has put in a massive 3140 mAh battery in the LG Optimus G Pro smartphone. This means that the battery does not run out on you throughout a complete day of smartphone usage, before being plugged in for the night.

With the Optimus G Pro, LG gives the customer a spare battery and also includes a charging dock in the smartphone package. The charging dock can charge that spare battery for usage whenever you need it.

Finally, the LG Optimus G Pro comes with some great power-saving options. You can have a number of features turned off automatically when the better level reaches a programmed low. LG has done well to include all of these options so you never have to fear a power loss again.

Price And Availability In Australia

Yet to be released, the LG Optimus G Pro is available at pre-order for all Australian customers. This pre-order package comprising of the LG F240S Optimus G Pro 4G LTE currently retails for $749.00 on MobiCity Australia.

The Verdict

All together, the Opimus G Pro is a combination of all the best features that LG can offer you in such a large body, specifically designed to make the experience user-friendly and immersive in a modern smartphone. There is no denying that this is a phone made for two hands. If you can get over the large body size, or if you do have some previous experience with large tablets, then the LG Optimus G Pro will make you feel right at home.
