What’s new with the Kindle Fire

The new Kindle Fire devices seem to have been crafted to challenge the dominance of Apple’s iPad. The new Kindle Fire has two models. First is the Kindle Fire HD 8.9″ and the other is the Kindle Fire HD. The former has a screen size of 8.9″, a bit bigger than that of the original Kindle Fire, which is 7″ but a bit smaller than that of the iPad, which is 9.7″. The Kindle Fire HD 8.9″ has two versions; one has 4G LTE wireless capability while the other has none. The Kindle Fire HD, on the other hand, has a 7″ inch screen, which is the same size of the original Kindle Fire.

Both models come with HD screens which could be Amazon’s answer, although still unmatched, to the new iPad’s retina display. It has a 1920 x 1200 resolution with 254 pixels per inch (ppi). The new iPad boasts a 2048 x 1536 resolution with 264 ppi.

Dolby Audio in Kindle FireBoth models also come with the exclusive Dolby audio and dual-driver stereo speakers for immersive, virtual surround sound. Kindle Fire HD 8.9″ with 4G will be available in 32 GB and 64 GB versions while the one without 4G and Kindle Fire HD 7″ will be available in 16 GB and 32 GB versions.

The 8.9″ Kindle Fire is equipped with a 1.5 GHz dual processor. The 7″ model, on the other hand, has a 1.2 GHz dual processor. Both are  with Imagination PowerVR 3D graphics core for fast and fluid performance.

The Kindle Fire is the first tablet equipped with two Wi-Fi antennas that will make downloading and streaming 40% faster. Below is the graph showing the connection speed of the new Kindle Fire compared to the new iPad and Google tablets.

What’s new with the Kindle E-reader Family?

It’s not only the Kindle Fire that got a makeover, the Kindle E-reader line had too. The new Kindle E-reader Family has two (2) new members: the basic Kindle model (or simply “Kindle”) and the new Kindle Paperwhite.

The Kindle is just the same as the basic model in the previous Kindle Family. The only difference is that the color of its body was made darker as compared to the previous model’s graphite color. Other than that, Amazon retained its features, screen size and capabilities.

Kindle PaperwhiteThe Kindle Paperwhite is rather new to our ears. This Kindle could be the best e-reader ever made as it has several revolutionary features.

First, it has a patented built-in light which evenly illuminates the screen of the device. This will provide excellent reading experience whether you are in a light or dark reading environment. This has made Kindle Reading Lights obsolete. The brightness of the light can be adjusted just like when you are adjusting your tablet’s screen brightness. The light is also power-efficient as it only uses low-power LEDs that consumes only a small fraction of the battery life. On the left is the illustration how the light works.

Second, the Kindle Paperwhite is called that way because of the enhanced resolution of the device’s screen. This model’s display has 62% more pixels making it at 212 ppi as compared to previous models’ 167 ppi. See the resolution comparison below. The display has a two-point multi-touch capability similar to that of the Kindle Touch.

Finally, unlike LED-lit devices, the Kindle Paperwhite boasts an uncompromised battery life despite the use of built-in lights. The device can last up to 8 weeks with a single charge based on half an hour reading a day with wireless turned off and the light setting at 10.

The Kindle Paperwhite comes in two versions; one with free 3G and the other without the said feature.

Which replaces which?

With the introduction of the new Kindle Family, some members of the previous generation of Kindle devices will no longer be available in the market. The Kindle Paperwhite will replace the old Kindle Touch. The basic Kindle model will be replaced by the darker Kindle. The Kindle Keyboard, which is the eldest in the family, will still be available. We have no idea if Kindle DX would still be reproduced though it is still available.

The new Kindle Fire devices will not replace the old Kindle Fire. They’ll just be worthy additions to the line making the Kindle Fire Family a four-member line.
