Amazon.com to Australia Shopping Guide

Online Shopping, without a doubt, causes several changes in the structure of the retail industry in Australia. According to a study conducted by PwC Australia in 2012, Australia online shopping accounts for 6.3% of the total retail sales in 2012. This is equivalent to $16 Billion of online retail expenditures in said year. Of said $16 Billion, $7.2 Billion or 45% were spent to offshore online stores. Among Aussies’ favorite offshore online stores is Amazon.com which is ranked by Alexa.com at #12 among the most visited websites in Australia.

Amazon Australia

Amazon.com won’t be at the 12th spot if Aussies cannot shop in said online store. Sure, there is no Amazon Australia or Amazon.com.au existing locally in Australia; but Amazon.com is also available to international customers. This is made possible through Amazon Global.

Why is it ideal to shop at Amazon.com?

  1. Amazon.com is based in USA. The products are listed in US Dollar. Considering the exchange rate between US Dollar and AU Dollar, Aussies have the advantage since products from Amazon would turn out to be cheaper than those locally available one.
  2. Amazon.com is the biggest online store in the world. Thus, you have many choices.
  3. Amazon.com is a trusted online store. You can transact using your credit card without any worry of getting scammed.

If what you see in the Product Details sections is “Currently, item can be shipped only within the U.S.”, then the item is not available for international delivery.

To be sure that the item is shipped internationally, go to Amazon Global page and when searching for products, keep the “International Shipping” filter in the search bar.

Warranty and Compatibility Issues

For product delivered overseas, remember that warranty may be honored by some manufacturers while some will not be valid. So be sure that the item you are buying has an International Warranty. Moreover, manufacturer service may not be given; manuals, instructions and safety guideline may be in a language different from the language of the country of destination. This happens very rarely since manuals are usually written in English or in several languages including English.

The product (and all accessories included) may not be designed in accordance with destination country standards, specifications, labeling requirements; and therefore the product may not conform to destination country voltage and electrical standards (hence, the use of adapter, voltage converter or other device may be required). Please see this article for voltage and plug comparison between US and AU electronics.

Finally, you’re answerable for reassuring that the items are allowed to be imported in Australia and pay necessary customs fees and duties which are estimated and collected by Amazon during check out. At the moment, any item that cost AU$1,000 or below are exempted from import fees. Please see this article about Australia’s customs duties.

Amazon Australia is ideal but Amazon.com is enough for the moment.

Amazon.com, with its wide variety of products, cheaper price and affordable shipping rate, is definitely the best online store that Aussies can rely on. While an Amazon Australia would be ideal for Aussie online shoppers, the available of Amazon.com to Aussies will suffice as of the moment. Shop now by clicking here.
